Hi Shaun. The best place for Goshawks is Windy Corner (grid ref' SK 168 927), just higher up the valley than the dam wall of Howden Res'. Go early morning anytime soon to hopefully see displaying goshawks. Note, you can only drive this far up the valley midweek. Weekends is off limits. The little centre at Fairholmes sometimes has crossbills and sometimes wood warblers singing nearby in late April and May. For ring ouzels, try the Derwent Edges above the valley. Accessing from Cutthroat Bridge (SK 214 874) is a good bet. Black grouse have recently been seen by Ewden Height (SK 230 978) on the Strines Road. Again, early morning, or dusk should be best. None of these species are easy, but they are all wonderful birds and worth the effort. Keep your eyes skywards at this time of year too for migrating ospreys. In spring they are seen fairly regularly flying north over the Derwent Valley.
Best wishes, Chris
