Hope you are right and we get a hoar frost, mind you I will have to be careful on the road down to the downs-it was very icy last week!
I can remember winters in my childhood when we had thick snow that lasted days,if not weeks!Well remember the icicles that hung from the gutters and trying to break them off.Of course you dont see that anymore,or ice on the inside of the window!! :)
I do love to see the snow on the downs and really enjoy walking in it-better than walking in rain!! Having a dog means walking in all weathers, and to be honest I'd rather be outside than stuck indoors.Only trouble when its wet and dull is you cant take photos very well.....

Hi Pete, well it looks like I wont be getting any snow shots in-its nearly all melted here.It is very cold out tonight and its been raining,so I expect we will have a frosty and icy start tomorrow morning, but no snow!!
I expect you are knee deep in the stuff! Snow never seems to last long in this part of Essex......

Hi Pete,No,had the same problem as you,was still snowing when I finished work!! Was disappointed to see that today it has started to thaw, but it is forecast we may have snow Friday.According to the weather forecast Saturday looks to be a cold but sunny day,so with luck I may get some snow shots in then-if it does snow friday!! Mind you,you cant really rely on the forecast can you.
Have been feeding the birds in the garden, filling up the feeders and trays before I go to work. They are going through the seed so fast, but they are worth it.
Hope you were able to get out today-I was stuck inside at work, the day was a lovely sunny one too :(
    Take care Pete

Yes Pete-All it takes is an unusual shadow or weird shaped tree, hope to see some shots from you soon:)
As for the snow, lucky you.I was hoping for some today and although it has snowed it has'nt settled-yet.We dont tend to get a lot here,if it does appear it disappears within a day or so.It may snow tonight and tomorrow but, alas,I am working....If it hangs around and stops snowing by 3.30pm I may just be able to get down Hadleigh castle to get some shots before it gets dark!!!

Thank Pete for the comment on the gulls picture. It was purely a reactive shot really, had no idea how it would turn out,but it came out quite well.Just shows there is a photo in the most unlikely of settings eh?

This morning I visited College Lake, the B,B & O Nature Reserve near Tring. I've written a post about it here:

Yesterday I visited the RSPB reserve at Fowlmere, which is between Royston and Cambridge, about an hour's drive from where I live. I'd been there a couple of times before, but this was my first visit for over ten years.

Fowlmere, as the name suggests, was originally a mere or lake inhabited by wildfowl. After a failed attempt to drain it, it was used for growing watercress for many years, but since the decline of that industry it has reverted largely to reedbeds. It is fed by chalk...

Rather than write a blog entry for my walk at Ashridge this morning, I've created a separate thread for it, as it should appeal to everyone on the Mammal Forum:

Gosh! It's months since I wrote a blog entry here!

Today I did a 12-13 mile walk south from near Royston, Herts., passing through the villages of Therfield, Kelshall and Sandon. I saw numerous Speckled Wood butterflies, one Small Tortoiseshell and two Red Admirals. I also saw a couple of Buzzards, and a female Muntjac deer.

I saw a Nettle-leaved Bellflower, lots of Clustered Bellflower, Wild Mignonette, both Red Campion and White Campion (though both very faded), and...

Usually when I go for a walk, I photograph only wildflowers that I don’t recognise or maybe those that I’m seeing for the first time this year. Today I decided to do a long walk (10-11 miles) that I knew would be good for wildflowers, and to photograph or record all the different wildflowers that I came across.

Starting from my home in Kensworth, I walked down the lane to Church End (the old part of the village) - along here I saw: Nipplewort, Herb Robert, Russian Comfrey, Agrimony,...
