Hi Jason. A quick addendum to my post on your "Foxes, and mating 'surrogacy'" thread. It's not so much that young vixens can't find a mate, but rather that they don't go looking (i.e. disperse) until their second or third year (as opposed to dogs, which tend to disperse during their first year). The question of whether these 'helpers' actually provide any discernible benefit (i.e. make it more likely that the cubs will survive), well that's a whole other WAB thread :D More info on my website, if you're interested.
