Mine died in the hard frost we had last year so I didn't notice until it was to late and didn't realise what had sent the water bad.
I cant maintain the pond in summer so tend to leave it till the autumn but that bloody pennywort is a pain in the butt..
This year I am going to give it an overhaul its been left for about 4 years so its time to sort it out and thin the yellow flags..

I tend to pull my water lily leaves out when they have turned brown and black and before they sink. I pull out the stem as well. The snails seem to like them though.

Although called a 'wildlife pond', mine and many others are actually managed, rather like some other parts of a garden (not much management in the rest of my garden!) - Grass as high as an elephant's eye!

Yes it was small but I have read that water lily leaves rotting in the bottom can pollute the water sending it black and rancid although mine just went a funny grey colour and the frogs did not breed in there for the first time in years so they must have known it would not have supported the young.
So they decided to take a chance in the big pond and even the toads didn't survive the newts don't like toads so I don't know what predated them.

I assume that it was your whole water lily plant which died and that because it was in a relatively very small space the rancidity was more intense.

Thank you for sharing that he is really cute..I have not had one frog or toad this year I will put some safe next year I have an old fish-tank or just put some in the barrel the water went manky last year as I lost my waterlily they send the water rancid when they die.
It was a shame as it was a lovely small one a nice size for the barrel.
Nice to see at least some of your tiddlers made it this far.:)

Well, whether just a compact or not you got some great shots! Funny how the blue of the Mediterranean sea is bluer around Greece. Some of those pics make me feel 'homesick' - I find it's much easier for me to feel Greek than English. Real Greek food - There's nothing like it! Plus Retsina and Ouzo (though I no longer drink any alcohol). The smell of the maritime pines and the dry heat and sound of the cigadas(sp?)... Hmmmmmmmm... Glad you had a great time but I'm not at all surprised. :)

We had a really relaxing time beach strolls in the evenings after dinner and half a carafe of wine lol
We went on a trip all round the Island so got to see places and village off the beaten track, we got to eat in family run restaurant so got to taste real Greek food cooked to perfection then we went on a boat trip to wee the blue caves and got to see and photograph the oldest olive tree in the island about 2000 years I think..
I only took my compact camera so the shots are not up to scratch but here they are anyway..
We also got to land on the beach at smugglers cove where the famous shipwreck is..
