Waitrose were sold out of watercress - People must have read your tip on the internet and rushed out to buy some, but I got a small bunch of watercress with some roots from my fwend and a couple of stems are now afloat after a ceremonial slinging. My little chalk river nearby is fast flowing and there is a weir just another 50 paces downstream on the walk to to town, so no watercress.

Look forward to seeing your accidental pics of the spawn. :)

Thanks for that info :). The free swimming tads (great to watch) have already started going amongst the duckweed and starwort(?) < Not sure what it is: small 'star' shaped leaf heads on long stems along the water surface.

It's in this pic, to the left:

The newts hole up during the day under and round the back of that submerged basket! The water has gone clear again since that pic. Now I'm thinking it may have them newt critters stirring it up!

Off to Waitrose now for watercress - They have a small store in town. Otherwise my friend Nina might have some in her fruit 'n veg shop. Her dad has ponds.

Hi WAB buddy! Please tell me a bit more about watercress in wildlife ponds apart from buying it from a supermarket and "flinging" it in!

How much do I put in (you've seen pics of the size of my small pond)? And do I do so over a shallow plant basket or in open water to float around like duckweed? I don't want to overcrowd my pond but it sounds like something the pond residents might enjoy. My water lily leaves are sprouting upwards.

Just shows you how strong the urge to mate is. At least it was having a fair old go at it before it croaked.

No chance in the foreseeable future. OH's Mum in hospital - visits every night. 3 h round trip, plus time visiting. I'm knackered already. :-(

Can't look, the OH is watching Japan on the news. He really gets fascinated by natural disasters. Can't prize him away from this sort of thing.
