Nice idea, but can't do this weekend as I'm going to visit my daughter in Tunbridge Wells.
If you go to Bricket Wood, the South West corner (that's on West of the railway line), has a different character to most of the rest of the wood. There are more mature trees and the remains of an old orchard. If you're disappointed with the rest of the wood, I'd suggest trying there. If you have a map (you should!) you may see that this area is more easily approached from Bucknells Lane in Garston (I used to live there some years ago). You can park in Bucknells Lane and walk into the wood. Bucknells Lane is where the Building Research Station is. Good luck in your hunt!
My first friend - marvellous! I've been away for a bit, and not entirely sure what being a friend involves (in this context, I hasten to add!), but lovely of you to think of me. No doubt we'll be seeing each other around here as time goes on.
Cheers
Sven
Hi Julie.
I've just had a look at last Thursday's 'The One Show' and the news item about horses being used in woodland isn't there. I guess it must have been on the local BBC News, immediately before The One Show.
I don't know if you saw it during the week - I think it was on 'The One Show':
It was about using draft horses for woodland management in Herts.. and I think St. Stephens was mentioned ( I didn't know there was a wood there), but it then went on to say that they were going to use horses in Bricket Wood for management. The item showed a Clydesdale, and another I can't remember the name of, harnessed together and dragging an oak log out of the wood - it was quite a pretty sight.
I mention this because I remembered your profile indicates you're a 'horsey' person.
Re: Egyptian Goose, this one is also on a local patch mixed in with Canadas and has been for some years now, but the only Egyptian cant help feeling sorry for it.
Thanks for the kind comments on my Pied Flycatcher pic. It was taken in a local wood, the first time I saw P Fly I traveled to Coombes in Staffs, 100 mile round trip. I didn't know they were just over the hill from me.
I've had a nice day... I received a book on insects and one on photography, and took the day off work and went to Pennington Flash nature reserve instead... not a bad day all round!
