The birds in my garden seem to have gone off fat blocks for the time being, and after watching the sparrows go into a feeding frenze after I tossed out some crumbs from the bread board I thought I'd try and bake something for them.
I looked online but couldn't find any recipes, so I thought I'd have a go at inventing one myself.
I based my recipe somewhat loosely on one I found for home-made dog biscuits, and changed the ingrediants to be more bird-friendly... it doesn't...

I got a hanging bird table last year- and almost immediately had to give up using it because of the squirrels... what they didn't get, the starlings did. In about 5 minutes- or less.
I spent quite a lot of time online looking for a way to convert it into a squirrel-proof, starling-resistant feeder, and finally found this amazing contraption. (Someone needs to inform Chapelwood that calling this a 'Squirrel Blocking' Cage rather than 'Squirrel Proof' is not helping the search...

I found this old squirrel-proof feeder when we moved here to North London last year... it was in pretty bad shape although I did try and use if for a while. A few birds had a go, but it usually would hang for days untouched.
After watching the starlings devour every mealworm I ever put out while the robin sat up on a branch watching forlornly, I decided to try and do something with this feeder.

I got the idea for this when I was visiting my parents in the States over Christmas. I came across a bird-feeder especially designed for woodpeckers, with a bit protruding at the bottom to give the bird something to brace its tail against, the way it would against the surface of a tree.
I had noticed how the sparrows struggled sometimes to try and balance on the seed feeders in my garden- contorting themselves to wrap around the underside of the feeder while they tried to grip on...

I have recently started modifying a few bird feeders, to try and see if I can come up with ideas that might work better for the birds.
It is frustrating, (and sometimes costly!) to go out and buy what appears to be a nice feeder, only to discover later that because of a careless or poorly thought-out design it is instead a potential health risk to the birds...as in the case of a peanut feeder I bought recently which retains water in the bottom, causing the nuts to go mouldy.
