Hi Goosey, are the moths Australian? In which case I can only suggest a family as my knowledge does not really extend beyond Europe. Although I will make more effort to visit the site. Seem's to have an increased number of WABBER's on there too.

We have experienced heavy rain for the last three days and although the sun shines as I write this on Friday morning, bad news is breaking about the aftermath. South Lakes has many closed roads making it difficult to get around. We’re not so bad here but look out over fields covered in water. If you log on to BBC Radio Cumbria or Lakeland FM you will be able to see images of the situation.

There’s a policeman lost in Workington and two bridges have been washed away in the northwest of the county. Much of the damage around Kendal is to developments on the River Kent’s flood plain unfortunately.

I might pop down to Newby Bridge later and have a look at the River Leven as it leaves Windermere. I’ll post an image or two if poss. Thanks for your message and concern. Apologies – this is a blanket message to all.

Hi Shirley. Thanks for your kind message. I must admit to only visiting WAB for a cursory look these days, although as the insects start to appear I'm spending a bit more time. I guess that's the reason that I have only just picked up your message from February! Aargh!
As for the Avatar - can you identify the species?

No luck. Even though it was kept damp the skin just dried out and the whole thing just shriveled up. Like you I thought it was later in the year before it emerged. The earliest record I have is the beginning of June and I was surprised when I found it so early then.

Yes I was talking about the Stinkhorn, Phallus impudicus. It will almost certainly grow again in the same place. One area I visit regularly has had it there for each of the last four years within feet of the same spot so weather does not seem to affect it a lot. I have my find in damp tissue to see if it will mature. I have done that successfully with the Dog Stinkhorn but I suppose because they are bigger I have not managed it with the full sized version.

This last week has been great for bringing the insects (and reptiles) out, I've started seeing some butterflies around, and last nights moth trapping was very successful, fingers crossed this weather will continue and we can finally have a good insect year after the last two terrible summers!

I didn't go on holiday anywhere last year so I didn't have the usual photos to share on watw, which has meant that I've hardly visited over the last few months, but I have been meaning to get back on there and when I do I hope to see you around :)
