Hi Ken, it's just the Lumix DMC-TZ20 that I have, so no changeable lenses, just a fixed lens. The macro setting on it is pretty good though, and it fits into a pocket really easily.

I noticed that in your reference, it refers to the beetle as being small. As yet, I have been unable to establish how small. Does your book give a size in mm?

I'm a bit of a raw prawn when it comes to six-legged creatures (apart from butterflies and dragonflies I suppose), but I'm definitely going to keep my eyes peeled for a Carabus nitens too.

Ken, do you know anything about the beetle Carabus nitens, or have you seen it on local moors? I believe it is rare, but whilst reading someone's walking blog, they said they had seen it between Rishworth Moor and Blackstone Edge. I've Googled it and it looks a cracker.

The only tiger beetle I have seen was up Cragg Vale and that's what I first saw, a small green flash. I have to say, I was expecting something bigger, when it landed nearby. I suspect they are more widespread than I perhaps give them credit for and I should look a bit harder in future. One critter I have expected to come across on the more heathery tracts of moor is the emperor moth. I know they have been seen on the moors between the White House and Cragg Vale, but even when I've searched up there at the right time of the year the only thing I could muster, was a rather frayed forewing of one, with no moth attached!

Cheers Ken. Was it Stanedge (Ammon Wrigley didn't like the D in the middle, so I omit it too!) where the tiger beetles were too? I'm fine ta. Most of my days out at the moment are centred on getting my bird year list respectable, but this usually tails off for me a bit when the better weather comes and I concentrate more on my walking and flowers and stuff. Roll on spring....this gloomy and cowd winter has felt like a long one! Hope you are okay. Chris

It would have been a bus pass but they keep moving the goal posts onwards - I will be 63yrs 9mnths and 27 days apparently before I will be in receipt of my pension and bus pass!!! And with the way time is passing it will be here in the next 10 mins!!!!

Hi Ken - Happy New Year to you too! Thanks for pointing out about the larch - I can think of one or two places locally where it might be then - I bet its round our caravan if truth be told tho those trees are Lleylandii not larch but you never know!!!
