Hi Chris, there were 2 calling to each other & giving fleeting glimpses about 30 yards past the Public Hide on the right along the causeway heading away from the road. Another was seen on the path to the Lower Hide, about 20 yards from it on the right, good views of this one. Hope this helps. Let us know if you are successful.

Hi Chris - the pamphlet uses some actual sizes in mm, but most arent given, including this - so otherwise they use small, medium and large, and theres no correlation to one with a given size, or further explanation............ if that helps..........................!

Hi Chris, I dont know Carabus nitens at all, however, I have a copy of Ground Beetles of Sorby (Shefield) and its mentioned byAlan Lazenby in there : paraphrased:
A most striking small carabus with metallic blue and gold striped elytra, 22 records - scarce, but prob under-recorded in terrain of moorland bogs, but has been seen 'trodden into a muddy path'.
The records shown are all to the east of Sheffield and one nearer our moors at Holmfirth.
Habitat is for wet moorland and heath with sphagnum - we can do that!
Some Hampshire, mainly pennines, NY moors into Scotland.
Mmmmmmmmmh, got me interested in this one too Chris, thanks for that, love to find it!
    Cheers
    Ken

I use Standedge as it gets confused with Stanage......its what I've always known!
Cicindela campestris, one of those latins I have in my head for some bizarre reason - not Standedge, but worn peaty areas, with some warming themselves on available rocks is the favoured type of habitat.
These have been around for at least 6 yrs to my knowledge - above stalybridge country park moors first, Carrbrook worn peat etc etc - I saw the burrows in dry peat (same as sand on heaths) and watched, saw them , but recently in the climbers boulders area and even more easily the chew brook path rocky areas above Chew piece plantation below indians head.
But also watch for a blur of green in flight..............I saw this at Den lane quarry in Uppermill last summer
    Good luck
    Cheers
    Ken

Hi Chris, Water Crickets are only something I discovered about 3 yrs ago, since then, found them loads locally.
Look for a trickling stream, ie very small, with little pools in it, theyll be there in summer. Bigger, they dont seem to like.
Seen just off the pennine way near Standedge, going south from Brun, there are watery boggy bits at the pathside, yomp beyond those and find little pools in between tussock grass. Better, surer, is at Dovestone, going up the side of Chew brook into Chew piece plantation, there are a couple of trickle streams, each small pool of 3ft square at most often has a few.
    Cheers, hope you are well,
    Ken

Hello Chris, I thought about you when I put the church on knowing your interest in these type of old buildings. Just put one on to images to give you a side view of the building. It is now looked after by English Heritage and it is set in a super position with great views.

I also enjoyed Krakow, some great old buildings to visit. Today I think I would struggle to do one trip.
    Great to hear from you.

Today we did our fifth Winter Solstice walk, an arcing route from Milnrow, taking in Blackstone Edge, to Littleborough.

With all the frost of late, we eagerly expected a moorland walk in cold, clear and icy conditions, so imagine our disappointment, when we left Milnrow, in cold, drizzle and swirling mist. Moorgrime as the older end call it around here.

Three of us set off up Kiln Lane (myself, Lee and Bob), with 'Tommo' a notable absentee this year (poorly). In...

A pair of Bullfinches have returned to my mum's garden in Milnrow (they first came last winter,
though disappeared in the spring). The male is an absolute beauty and is very tolerant of us 'gawping' at him at close range through the xexexexexexexe window.

Whilst I have seen them fly over our place in New Hey, they have yet to actually come in the garden. But, just lately, we have had our first Great Spotted Woodpecker in the garden, so one must'nt be greedy.

As the sun was setting this evening, I drove over to Dean Head moors (near Scammonden Dam) to look for Short Eared Owls.

'T was rather disappointing really, due to a low, bright sun spoiling my scanning of the moor. It was the first time I'd visited this moor and was astonished to find the moorland grave of a local farmer and shepherd who wanted to 'return to his flock, one last time'. Adjacent is a wrought iron seat, a suitably quiet place for remembrance and reflection. I'll...

Took a windy walk on to the moors behind the White House pub on the A58 this afternoon. Was hoping to see Twite at the feeding station by White Holme Res'. Surprisingly I didn't see any. I was also hoping for possible Snow Buntings on Byron Edge, but was less surprised when I missed out on these too.

In fact birdlife was rather scant, with just a Raven overhead, a 'v' formation of 25 gulls, which was a mix of Greater Black Backed and Herring Gulls.

Across the valley,...

Rather pleased with myself today as my letter has been published in the local newspaper (Rochdale Observer). I wrote my annoyance at a 'new' local thoroughfare that has been named 'Sir Issac Newton Way'. What has he got to do with Milnrow? My suggestion is 'Tim Bobbin Way', after our great 18th century Lancashire dialect writer.

Whilst out in the garden this evening (I often go into the garden at night to listen for Tawny Owls and the like), I heard the hoarse rasp of a Snipe calling...
