I just smeared them on, but usually on the underside of a branch to hide them from the birds. Some folk say attach grease bands below them on the branches to restrict potential nibblers, but I've never done this. I also bought a booklet from this website that proved really useful. Nick Wheeldon will also sell you berries.

Seasonal wishes. Do you make an incision for the Mistletoe seed, stuff it under a bark flake or just wipe it on a convenient branch?

Merry Christmas pal. Regarding the mistletoe, I just used the shop bought stuff, though I kept it in a pot of water outside for a couple of weeks after Christmas to hopefully prolong the viability of the berries. Saying that, I only have four plants on my tree and over the years have put on a lot more berries that four!

Hi Chris
I've also been taking Glucosamine tabs daily for several years but still am not convinced they do much good. I forgot to take them on holiday for the last three weeks and nothing's changed...yet!

I've had xrays and CAT scans but noone can tell me about the excruciating pain in one small spot on the outside of my right knee.

I'll check out the Superfeet insoles. Thanks for the tip.

Cheers for the insoles reply Woodman. Further to your knee complaint, I couldn't get to the bottom of mine either until someone on W.A.B described my symptoms perfectly (it was I.T.B.S). I tried various things to shift it (apparently I can be a sod to get rid of), including new boots, stretches before walks, a couple of months with no hill-walks and anti-inflammation tablets and it eventually went. It did cause me a lot of trouble though and I'd hate for it to flare up again.
