I like fish! I was a mad keen angler in my younger days, though nowadays only do a spot of sea fishing when I go on my summer hols. If I'm in the right place (ie near water!), I do make the effort if conditions are favourable to look for them too. I remember watching salmon leaping at Stainforth Force a few years back and found it a wonderful experience. Cheers for the invite on the 9th, but the missus is out on Sat' so I'm looking after the dynamic duo (congratulations on your imminent grandchild too). However, if she is back at a sensible hour I might bomb over. Oh yes, have you heard about the Western Bonelli's warbler by Arnfield Res' at Tintwistle? My only opportunity to go is first light tomorrow morn', so if the youngest nipper gives me a hassle free night (unlikely), I might give it a go. From what I've heard though it is both elusive and drab looking.
I'll let you know if I see it.

You about on sat 9th? RSPB are doing a bioblitz up at Dovestone - I'll be manning one of the recording stations - the idea is to get as many good records as poss by us and the public, plus some experts about too - they dont have much up there apart from birds,so bit of fun, but with a serious pseudo scientific approach to recording.

Just had a male redstart not a stone's throw from my front door! You can't beat this time of the year. My local swallows and willow warblers came back today too.

Well done on the rough-legged, a great find. I only saw my first one last Nov' and it involved a long twitch up to the northern side of the North York Moors. Saying that, it showed superbly and it was my star bird of 2010. We went on a colossal drive birding yesterday. The northernmost extremity was the moors between Keld and the Tan Hill Inn for black grouse (an annual event), whilst our final halt was Marshside near Southport for the lesser scaup.

None yet Chris, but there were Ravens, stonechat, loads of grouse, a couple of common buzzard and this lovely rough-legged, I suspect female, cruising overhead, way up, for a few minutes, made the day!
Used to be good for short ears over the moors, dont know if it still is.

Cheers Chris, yes I know where you mean, possibly one of the best places for whole swathes of Cottongrass as you say.
I have seen the crossbill at Binn Green, and one has been sen drinking from the pond at the car park, but UU have cut down so many pines for timber near there that it may not be an easy future spot.
RSPB (incl me!) have made a wildlife pond down the path across the tarmac road , nearer the res where we've cut a lot of Corsicans down and planted native broadleaves, which should start to attract birds too.

Only just noticed you asked about Manshead End! It is the hill to the north of the A58, between the White House and Ripponden. It is a lovely quiet section of moor, full of curlews and cotton grass in season. Millstone ale, I've only ever come across that at the Heights. I knew it was local, but didn't realise it was Mossley. My favourite of all...Coniston Bluebird. If only all beer tasted as good. Oh aye, a crossbill has been showing regularly at Binn Green of late and here in the garden we've been getting a few siskin and a garden lifer in lesser redpoll recently.

The others (as far as I can remember) were Manshead End, Blackstone Edge, Pule Hill, Alderman and Alphin.

Hi Chris, Countryfile next sunday has a bit about packhorse trails of the Pennines, so might be worth watching...............
