| | | Facebook 'fan pages' I've noticed there are a few folks with facebook 'fan pages' (as opposed to facebook profiles) for their blogs/photography web pages and/or paosting recent photos on, so I thought it would be an idea for folks to put them all on one thread like we did with or twitter accounts.

Mine is here: https://www.facebook.com/UKWildlife | ....I've added you as one of my featured favorites. I can't add/request you as a Fb Friend because I only have a Musician/Band set of pages. RedRobin's music profile on Facebook
Love your pics, Matt, but again I can't invite you as a Fb Friend - You can only become a 'Fan' of my music.

| | | Re: Facebook 'fan pages' Can somebody/anybody enlighten my ignorance on a couple of points, please?
Some lovely pictures and interesting comments but how exactlydfo these 'fan pages' differ from ordinary ones?
Furthermore (my ignorance about this is profound, remember ), what advantage does Facebook have over other fora? I have e-mail to communicate with friends and colleagues; I have fora (such as this) to maintain contact with people interested in the same things as me. What advantage is there in me joining a clunky, confusing, unfocussed forum like FaceBook? I should stress that I do have a Facebook account and I check it regularly but seldom see much of interest |

Simples: Facebook is a network and is currently one of the best free media for spreading the word about anything. Combine it with Twitter and it becomes even more powerful. Things can snowball.
Joining and using Facebook doesn't mean that you have to give up any of your other forms of social interaction or communication.

Originally Posted by Paul mabbott Some lovely pictures and interesting comments but how exactlydfo these 'fan pages' differ from ordinary ones? | As I understand it, anyone with a FB account can ‘Like’ a fan page, without having to be accepted as a ‘friend’. So, Matt and Neil, for example, post blog links and some of their latest photos to their fan page so that everyone who has ‘Liked’ them can see. It also means that they don’t have to worry about sharing too much information, because all the stuff like date of birth, hobbies etc. aren’t included anyway. With a regular account some configuration is usually required to make sure that people can only see what you’re happy for them to see. Moreover, on a regular page you typically need to be accepted as a friend before you can see any photos or information posted by that person. Quote:

I should stress that I do have a Facebook account and I check it regularly but seldom see much of interest | It’s an instant way to communicate updates, photos, articles, etc. about all topics, with others. I, for example, often post my photos to my FB account for others to see, even though I don’t generally consider them of good enough quality or relevance to post to the WAB Gallery. Moreover, you need to remember to go and check out the WAB Gallery for updates, unless someone happens to start a thread; on FB all I do is log in to see a timeline showing all the recent updates from the friends I’ve ‘subscribed’ to. Similarly, on FB you get to see pics that you wouldn’t see on forums like WAB because they’re un-related to nature. Fourwings, for example, posts loads of his excellent aviation shots on FB but, for obvious reasons, they don’t appear in the WAB Gallery. So, FB doesn’t replace WAB/fora, e-mail, etc. – it’s just used in conjunction with.
I agree that it can be clunky and somewhat disjointed, that the owners have a habit of revising the look (in my opinion, unnecessarily) and there is a lot of potential spam and annoying game invites that I see. That said, I joined it a few years ago and I don’t regret it; it’s been a tremendous source of information. What you see each time you check is a reflection of who you're friends with and what pages you've liked.
Cheers,
Marc. |

| | | Re: Facebook 'fan pages' Marc speaks the truth:
As a Musician/Band I have a 'fan' set of pages and I can't Post or Comment on the Walls or Timelines of my fans (unfortunately). Besides which, every Fb page owner can apply settings to block or allow etc etc.
In fact facebook is a bit too over protective and the network is consequently restricted - Typically American in its 'censorship' attitudes.
Facebook is merely an extra network which can benefit WAB additionally. It's as much or as little as you want to make of it. No need to listen to the Fb haters.
