Electronic nature diary?

I am not sure this is the right forum. For 10 months now I have been using Evernote as my electronic nature diary. My electronic notebook can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection, is fully searchable (when did I last see a Small Tortoiseshell? What was the first Chiff Chaff singing?) and also has a copy at my home computer. Importantly, it is free software. I was wondering what software does people use for nature note taking. Evernote has the drawback that you cannot export the notes effectively. This is only a nuisance when I want to send my records let say to Butterfly Conservation and I have to go note by note and write by hand all the details into an Excel spreadsheet.

I have been using a thread on WAB as a plant diary this year. Another WABber (DavidBr) does this as well
