Just to let people know:
SCARBOROUGH FIELD NATURALIST’S SOCIETY in conjunction with
SCARBOROUGH MUSEUMS TRUST
OPEN LECTURE
“COSTA RICA – GEM OF CENTRAL AMERICA” BIRDS AND WILDLIFE
TO BE GIVEN BY
DR. JOHN R. MATHER D.Sc.
AT THE PUBLIC LIBRARY, VERNON ROAD,
SCARBOROUGH TUESDAY MARCH 8TH
DOORS OPEN 7.00PM ALL WELCOME
This event is open to all who are interested in birds and other wildlife. Dr. Mather is a well known and respected Ornithologist, and has held many posts in local and national organizations. He has twice been president of Harrogate and District Naturalist’s Society, President of Yorkshire Naturalist’s Union, a council member of the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, a member of Spurn Bird Observatory Committee, and the British Trust for Ornithology Ringing and Migration Committee. He has also been Chairman of The Bird Observatories Council and British Ornithologists’ Union as well as serving for ten years on the British Birds Rarities Committee. He has travelled extensively in Africa, including 34 trips to Kenya, and in India, Nepal, North America and Europe. Dr. Mather has written three books – the monumental “Birds of Yorkshire”, “Where to Watch Birds in Yorkshire” and “Birds of the Harrogate District”. He is a very popular speaker, having lectured throughout the north of England. His subject for this event deals with the birds of Costa Rica (including the Resplendent Quetzal), but will also cover the Geology, mammals, butterflies, beetles, orchids etc., so will be of wide interest.
It is hoped there will be a display (before the lecture) of some selected exhibits from the Scarborough Museums’ bird skin collection featuring species of local interest.
Scarborough Field Naturalists and Scarborough Museums Trust hope this event will not only be enjoyable, but will raise the profile of both organizations. All are welcome. Why not combine your visit with a day’s birding on the east coast, and a fish and chip tea!
