| | | Thursley Common Meet Well here goes. I'm going to put forward 2 suggestions for a meeting at Thursley Common in Hampshire.
According to my book it is one of the premier sites for odonates in the South.
It supports 26 species.(Drool)
My suggestion is either the weekends of 16th/17th June or 23rd/24th June.
I'm trying to get a peak for emergence, which is a tough one as they all do it at different times
Please feel free to chuck your ideas in the pot-I'm a beginner myself.
Jules Wild-Woman

| | | Re: Thursley Common Meet Nice one Jules.
It goes without saying I'll be there, wouldn't miss it for the world. Brilliant & Downy Emerald Dragonfly, Golden-ringed Dragonfly, Keeled Skimmer and White-Faced Darter are all present at Thursley and are all on my "to get" list.
If I can bag all those in just one weekend I will be a very happy chappy |

| | | Re: Thursley Common Meet I can do either weekend and am happy to drive from Brum. I may very well pick Steve up as we spoke about this yesterday and would be looking to make a weekend of it, camping and all that.
For me its a date. |

| | | Re: Thursley Common Meet Jules, unless they've moved it, I think you'll find Thursley is in Surrey, not Hants!
One of my favourite places + for me one of most devastating events of past year was the destructive fire started by some pyromaniac moron whch destroyed so much of this jewel. I think the Sand Lizards have gone.
From an ecological point of view it'll be interesting to see how communities are recovering, but I think it'll still be rather sad to see! |

There is a view that fires were once a commonplace and might even help to maintain a 'real' heathland fauna (whatever that is ) - a lot of reptiles and insects can elude fires if these are flashfires - burning out quickly and moving on. I've no experience and it does seem risky but certainly on our upland heaths (which, admittedly, are a lot larger) regular controlled burns seem to have minimal impact on the fauna. |

Yes, that's one thing I want to check out before the meeting-the effects of the fire and whether there are restrictions, whilst recovery takes place.
Also, the need for B&B's if members are doing an overnight job, if they're not camping.
Any input gratefully received.
Jules

| | | Re: Thursley Common Meet Multimap centered on Thursley Common car park here
News report about the fire with a man bailed for arson here.
Thursley is OS map 186 ref SU 901 417
There is a YHA at Hindehead here
The closest stations are Milford and Whitley (just right of the A3 on the map, a bit further away are Farnham, Haslemere and Godalming. For those driving, the A3 joins the M25, and the A331 (pan out and north) joins the M3.
I was at a wedding reception that weekend and from the garden we were overlooking the whole area involved in the fire, it was huge !. It had been burning for some days previous with huge smoke clouds dominating the local area. |

| | | Re: Thursley Common Meet Sounds like it should recover well in time Jules, doesn't look like the Odes will have been effected much if at all.
I'm planning to camp when we come down as is Boddie. |
