| | | Re: Thursley Common Meet I have just noticed this thread. It is a long time since I visited Thursley and I went there for the resident Dartford Warblers ( I presume they are still there). I remember a flock of about 40 Crossbills dropping into a lone tree only a few feet from my head. Jeez, what I would give for that opportunity again.
I wasn't into Dragonflies then, not so much into them now, but after the Wicken Fen meet last year, which I thoroughly enjoyed, I can't really miss this one.
The June dates are fine by me so please add my name to the list.

Have you decided on the week-end yet?
You mentioned the weekends of 16th/17th June or 23rd/24th June.
I don't think people should be too worried about the fires
on Thursley common. As a boy I lived on the edge of the common
in thursley and it used to get burnt about every 7-10 years and
it used to regenerate pretty quickly. (50s & 60s)
What has changed most on the common since then is the
reversion to woodland - the landscape now is so different
to what it used to be - the old heathland being maintained
by the army using it as a training ground. Many was the game
of hide and seek that I used to play using the old army trenches.
Elstead moat used to have no trees around it at all, and
that was maintained by the tanks that used to use it as
a testing ground for waterproofness, and locals used to
use it for swimming. |

Fingers crossed.
