| | | Hampstead Heath, London, October 7th I thought this might be of interest to some. Quote: Free Public Lecture, Oliver Rackham -
'Hampstead Heath and Woods: deer, woodcutting and the urban heat island'.
Thursday 7 October, Rosslyn Hill Chapel NW3, 8.00pm.
The Heath & Hampstead Society is delighted to announce details of its 15th Annual Springett Lecture. This is a rare chance to hear Oliver Rackham in London, who will discuss Hampstead Heath and Kenwood in his talk. The event is free, and all are most welcome.
Professor Rackham, an authority on the British countryside, especially trees, woodlands and pasture, will be bringing together some of his research topics into the effects on Kenwood and the Heath of their higher temperatures as urban heat islands - a subject particularly topical in the context of the effects of global warming on our environment
Rosslyn Hill Unitarian Chapel 3 Pilgrims Place, London NW3 1NG is in London's Hampstead village on Rosslyn Hill between Willoughby Road and Pilgrim's Lane. It is 440 yards down Hampstead High Street on the same side of the street as Hampstead Tube Station. The 46 and 268 buses stop nearby.
Professor Oliver Rackham, Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. This is a rare opportunity to hear him in London. He has been described as "a Renaissance man, an ecological Sherlock Holmes". He is also a national treasure. No other scientific writer has so lucidly demonstrated that humans and woods are ancient partners of linked origins, and could be so again".
Rackham has written a number of well-known books, including Trees and Woodland in the British Landscape, The History of the Countryside, The Last Forest: The story of Hatfield Forest, Woodlands. Kenwood and Hampstead Heath are mentioned in some of his books.
It is possible that Professor Rackham may bring books for sale and signing.
| I knew his name was familiar; I just realised I have a book of his.

It's a tad far for me but Oliver Rackham cannot be missed if you live within striking distance. |

| | | Re: Hampstead Heath, London, October 7th He is the very epitome of "mad professor".
His knowledge of woodlands is extraordinary but on a week-end course I did of his he had no idea when his listeners were no longer listening. He won't finish on time I bet!!! |
