Not content with laying in the mud, Dave is now staring danger in the face. Most sensible people when faced with a hornets nest try and put as much distance between it and themselves. Not Dave, he goes in for the killer shot with hornets buzzing around his head.

Worth it though for these shots...
It was nice to meet a kindred spirit who appreciates the benefits of horizontality...

| | | Re: East Sussex meet up. Here's three more from today:
Moss carder bee (with Mike kindly holding a leaf behind for the background)...
Not a field grasshopper as I first thought but a common green...
And a female common blue butterfly...
More tomorrow with a bit of luck...

Also there are some examples photos of my caterpillar finds.

| | | Re: East Sussex meet up. Had a really good day, both the wife and I enjoyed ourselves. Thanks very much for organising!
I only took about half a dozen shots as I dragged my recently acquired 300mm f2.8 around hoping for some decent bird shots. Sods law that the 10 minute gap I had a macro lense on, a Buzzard flew over.
I did however get this on the way back to the carpark - a first ever sighting for me.

Regards Dave | Cheers Dave, I'll try and get his picture up later tonight. I didn't notice at the time but he's covered in tiny white mites. I don't know whether they're doing him any harm or not but there sure is a lot of them. Quote:

Just after we left you the sun came back out and we had a couple of dozen hawkers in the air - looked like mainly migrants but I think maybe a few southern in there too. But we didn't see a golden-ringed. Lovely photo.

| | | Re: East Sussex meet up. Here is the mite-covered beetle...
And here are the caterpillars, in the order in which we found them...
1.
2.
3.
I remember when I was photographing number 3 that I thought it was the same as number 1 but it doesn't look like it is. I've searched the "Egg, Larve and Caterpillars" Gallery for the three species mentioned and the only one in there is the green-veined white which I don't think I photographed. From Googling I think number 2 is the dot moth but I'm not sure about the others.
Here is the vapourer moth caterpillar that joined us for lunch...
And here are some more unidentified larvae...
Probably a species of sawfly.
No idea!
Here's a couple of hoverflies that are quite easy to identify... Episyrphus balteatus - there's a lot of 'em about! Rhingia campestris - can't mistake that snout!
Finally, the little snail that Mike spotted while photographing some bracket fungi is the plaited door snail...
