Bedfont Lakes WAB-meet?

Hi All,

Would anyone be interested in a meet at Bedfont Lakes Country Park, nr Ashford, Middlesex, in June. We have an all day free event for the public, imaginatively called Nature Day, which caters for all forms of interests, birds, flowers. moths, butterflies, mammals (small and largish), bats, dragonflies, pond invertebrates, a mining bee bank, and more.
I thought it might be nice for WABbers to come along and discover what delights I and James (Wellies101) have to put up with at work
I will confirm the date later, but it is a weekend jobby.

Any takers?

Cheers,

Adam

Yep Adam, I'm subscribing to the thread at least. There is a chance I can make it. Sounds like fun.

Sounds like a good meet but will have to wait for the date as June is a busy one already.

Ditto. I'm definitely going to the Norfolk meet and would like to get to the Farne Islands in June too. However, middlesex is not too far for me and I wouldn't need to be away overnight so if the date is good I'll be there.

Well having a son living West Berks- I think we'd be tempted to bed down there for the night. Is it over 2 days Adam?

Re: Bedfont Lakes WAB-meet?

Nature day itself is a one day event that runs from dawn until people have had enough of the bats at night, but if there is demand then I can arrange for WaBbers to have a second day on site or at another site/s nearby.

Forgot to mention that we usually have bird ringing going on during the morning to, and I will see if our bat handlers would mind coming along to do a box check on the day.

I will get the date out, its just that I'm not at work this week. So watch this space.

Cheers,

Adam

Hello Adam,

Well. What a terrible job you have! How do you "put up" with it? 'Have just looked at the website for Bedford Lakes Country Park. If I still lived in Wandsworth, I'd certainly come along

Re: Bedfont Lakes WAB-meet?

Hi D,

You're only 1.5 hrs drive from us. The website is woefully out of date and lacking in info. I have just done a session training to update it.

Cheers,

Adam

Sounds good to me. Not sure exactly where it is but I dont think it can be too far from Twickenham.

Re: Bedfont Lakes WAB-meet?

Well, the time is creeping near! Three months to go....

Yes Adam, I guess it isn't that far, really. Plus, it will be a great opportunity to meet up with fellow WABbers, you are right :-)

Re: Bedfont Lakes WAB-meet?

Once I have the itinerary sorted I will post it so you can see what we will be up to on the day. Should involve a dawn chorus, mammal trapping, flower walks, bird ringing, bat walks, etc.

Cheers for now.

Adam

Re: Bedfont Lakes WAB-meet?

Thanks for the update, Adam.

A dawn chorus, eh? Looks like I may have to find somewhere to stay nearby on the Friday night as, despite my name, I really don't do mornings! My sister lives in Hooley, I may have to work on that one

Dawn.

Re: Bedfont Lakes WAB-meet?

Hi Adam, to be realistic I'll probably only make it for some of the day. Hope this is OK.

Re: Bedfont Lakes WAB-meet?

No problem. The day is run so that people can come and go according to their interests. You certainly wouldn't have to stay all day if you don't want to.

Cheers,

Adam

Its next to no distance, in the car its probably about 15 minute drive depending on where in Twickenham you are? The train from Twickenham involves getting a bus once you get to Feltham (about 10 minutes on train then 10 minutes on bus). The bus stops directly outside one of the two park entrances.

Re: Bedfont Lakes WAB-meet?

I'm lucky, I live about a mile and a half from Bedfont Lakes. Is it now maintained by Laings? If it is, perhaps you could advise them on the most wildlife friendly ways to approach maintaining the other open spaces in the LB of Hounslow. They cetainly don't have much of a clue at the moment, cutting the grass so often that the flowering plants don't have a chance to bloom and putting our already beleagured beens and butterflies under greater threat. They also seem to have a policy of cutting right back to the edges of fields leaving no buffer zone for the wildlife. I wish these people would understand that nature doesn't do tidy. Come back CIP - all is forgiven
