Minsmere 08

I wondered if anyone would be interested in a Minsmere meet for when the bitterns are booming?

If not another summer meet would be good

Yup, April should be OK for booming, though I have heard them later - but hey!, never assume you will see or hear a bittern even at Minsmere, then you can't be disapointed

The Spring bank holiday rains, with 10cm overnight rise in water levels, made for a very bad "bittern year" last year - the eggs got cooled or the chicks waterlogged

But another meet sounds great.

Re: Minsmere 08

Unfortunately Birdforum are doing a Minsmere meet on April 28/29th and I have promised to go on that one.

I can't see me doing both of them but if the BF one doesn't go ahead then I will join you.

Re: Minsmere 08

Usually they do, although one year was poorly attended. I think there were about twenty of us this year. Certainly about ten of us started early on the Saturday and did Dunwich Heath and the woods before meeting up with the others at Minsmere.

Quite a few of us met up on the night in a pub in Westleton for a pint and a meal.

There wasn't so many stayed over for Sunday but there were still a good number of us to make it worthwhile.

Re: Minsmere 08

A little bird told me that the bitterns like booming at dawn and dusk so to be there for the weekend or a long day gives you more chance to hear them

We could always plan the wab meet for the same day as the BF one , then you could have a foot in both camps - hopefully leading to mutual interest and bonding across both forums members (okay whose for a group hug) ... or a massive punch up of course ... tho i'm sure that minsmere is big enough for the both of us if it comes to that

I'm looking at moving to the north east to be with my better half so it might be a bit far for us to come, but if we're down that way we might do.

Re: Minsmere 08

That's a distinct possibility. The day is led by two wardens of Minsmere and both of them are superb birders and also know the reserve like the back of their hands.

At the end of the Saturday we will also meet up again in a pub (to be announced) for a drink and a meal)

John

Re: Minsmere 08

Sorry the BF dates are 26 / 27th.

David knows the guys that take us around Minsmere and knows how good they are.

If any of you guys & gals can do both meets (WAB & BF) that would be great.

John

Pedant mode on/

The two guys in questions are superb birders (and blokes), but they are not technically wardens - they are part of the gang of "voluntary bird guides", aka "lurkers", that lead walks and hang around hides to give whatever help is asked for, and I am grateful to many of them for lots of help since I have become more "serious".

pedant mode off/

I don't know, but there could be an issue if they started taking lots of trips with largish groups. Normally Minsmere makes a small charge (4 smackers for members) for the led walks.

Yes, Mrs Fish, I know the reserve and invirons quite well, a bit of the history and some of how the place is managed, but I am not an expert naturalist, and certainly am not an expert birder, or indeed expert in any field, though I do know most of the local flowers.

The WAB meets that I have been on have been wonderful days of learning from each other, and there has been enough expertise to leave me gasping in admiration and jealousy

If folks want more of a "led" day, then I can certainly make inquiries, either from the volunteers or possibly from the wardens - e.g. the bug man at Minsmere (1000 species), but I would think Minsmere would want some form of contribution for their time, though I would find out.

I was fairly combatative in my working life, these days I like to go with the flow, so what does everyone want? - though there is no hope of making everyone happy

Happy New Year

David
