| | | Chanonry Point Dolphins I am spending a week in Scotland late May, early June, and was hoping to visit Chanonry Point to see the dolphins.
Does anyone know if they will be around at this time of year, or are they more frequently seen over the winter months? Any particular time of day, or tide, that favours better sightings? And is there any specific spot I should be heading for?
Many thanks!

| | | Re: Chanonry Point Dolphins They are there all year round, either side of low tide is when I've had most luck. If you drive through Fortrose, the road to Chanonry is signposted, just drive down to the end of the public road, through the golf course, there is a parking area and just walk along the shingle right out to the point, only a minutes walk. If the tide is in, there's a path between the houses that ends up in the same place, it's slightly easier walking anyway if you're carrying scope, tripod, camera etc.
Usually there are plenty of other people around so it's easy to know you're in the right place. The Dolphins do come in really close, you won't need a scope to see them, but there can be quite a bit of bird life around as well, so having a scope is useful. There are also boat trips from North Kessock which are meant to be quite good as well.
Regards, Audrey. |

| | | Re: Chanonry Point Dolphins Only thing I'd add is if you are unlucky enough not the see any (I've been there three times and had good sightings every time) the rest of the Black Isle is worth investigating.
Hope this site and the links are useful. Dolphin home Page

| | | Re: Chanonry Point Dolphins As Audrey says it is easier to turn back on foot after parking and head for the 'ginnel' walkway between two of the houses which will be on your right - exit into the dunes, turn right and head for the shingle point - there could be plenty of folk also sat and standing around, so choose your spot and join in. I seem to think we've been there before high tide as I recall having to back up the shingle several times to get away from the water!!
