[I watched a wildlife SOS type prog a few years ago where a Polish family was investigated by police and RSPCA for killing and cooking a swan ] | We have some native bad'uns amongst us too. When I first came to Suffolk in 1968, I eventually ended up working as a fork lift truck driver for Fisons (fertilizers) at Ipswich docks. When we used to do overtime on a Sunday, fellow F/L truck driver, Old Joe (long dead) and I would have our lunch sitting on the quayside and feed the swans in the water about 15 ft below us. One quiet Sunday morning, Joe pulled out of his pocket a long piece of nylon with a nasty looking hook attached.
On this he placed some bread and lowered it down to the water. Mum, Dad, and 5 cygnets swam up to it. I couldn't watch, and went back into the factory. Joe returned later with his evening meal - a dead cygnet. How the poor thing must have suffered and for the mother swan to see her baby hauled up out of the water must have been awful.
Joe had already done about 20 years service at the factory - I hate to think how many swans he killed. A real country boy they used to call him, but then again, they never knew what he got up to on a Sunday - let alone what he did at home.

| | | Re: Hedgehog Suicide pact? I once worked with a young bloke who hailed from one of the less salubrious areas of Bristol. Like most of his mates he had a dog. The dog could unroll a Hedgehog and bite/eat the hog inside its armour this left just the, as he put it, "the wrapper" He was not stupid, just naive, I explained my interest in wildlife and with eyes brimming with tears he agreed not to to do it again,
(then I let go )

| | | Re: Hedgehog Suicide pact? Bluecow,
thanks for giving us an update on the situation and for persevering with the matter as far as you have, a lot further than most people would take the time to do.
It is a shame that the 'system' fails people who do try do help. |

| | | Re: Hedgehog Suicide pact? I hope the dispicable `people` or `person` that did this are found, it really makes me sad that people can treat wildlife in such a disgusting, cruel and disrespectful way
Most of society dont seem to care at all about wildlife, the `its only hedgehogs` attitude makes me angry. |

| | | Re: Hedgehog Suicide pact? Is anybody else having second thoughts about the authenticity of this opening post ?
I believe somewhere Bluecow mentioned 18 found dead within a few metres of road which seems very strange in itself, but it is the naivety of the title of this thread which is so worrying.
Then why should she take offence to my being very concerned about this very serious alleged offence ? Admittedly she did keep in touch, but failed to respond to any of the suggestions put to her - until pressed.
Quoting from a recent press article:
In the 1950's it is thought the were 30 million in the back gardens and fields of Britain. But less than 50 years later, the population had colapsed to an estimated 1.5 million.
It is thought numbers of this once ubiquitous mammal have now fallen to a fraction of even that 1990s figure. Go on, think about it, when was the last time you saw a hedgehog ? End Quote.
If you are still out there Bluecow, please get back to us.

| | | Re: Hedgehog Suicide pact? I'd advise you to - literally IGNORE the rag-that-seems-to-be the Local Press
- and go straight to National Newspapers !
May I suggest that any releavant photgraphs be found & shown to their reporters for their use - the pictures would 'make' the story for national
"consumption" - even though said pictures could be thought of as distressing.
But don't mention any 'pact' theory - I beleive it could be seen as 'trivialising' the issue , when I'd put money on it that it's MUCH more likely something to do with Human Intervention.

Things are not fitting together here and any possible excuses such as being under pressure, too many family commitments, or frustration are simply not good enough - assuming there really were 18 hedgehogs killed.
As for Bluecow not having the time to hang around at a police station to give a statement over something this serious - this too raises questions.

Neil. | I think you are being very unfair. This is a new member (who has probably since left the forum and personally I couldnt blame her), who contacted us concerned about a particular situation. She did try to take action, but did not, for perfectly valid reasons, feel able to take it any further. You may think it sad that she was not able or willing to do anything else, but to suggest that the whole thread is a lie or hoax is unacceptable, in my opinion. |

| | | Re: Hedgehog Suicide pact? It's all a bit odd. I mean 18 hedgehogs - I haven't seen 18 hedgehogs in the last 20 years, and this semi-rural area used to be 'hedgehog rich'! Can anyone on this forum 'put their hands on' 18 hedgehogs in a short while, without raiding a sanctuary?
