It's behaviour associated with "testing" a female to see if she's ready to mate. In the States pheromone/hormone/doe urine preparations are commonly used to attract bucks for photography and to shoot.
It has all the hallmarks of a chap either just deploying such scent or having some spilt on him!

Territorial defence would have involved the sharp bits at the front end.
