| | | Pine Marten scat?
I found this scat the other day on a prominent log by the side of a wooded stream in the Glenelg area. It was very fresh and had a non-offensive (ish) odour (the wood sorrel leaf in the top right hand corner gives an idea of scale). It didn't have much consistancy but there were beetle remains in it. I was thinking it may be a Pine Marten. Does anyone have any other ideas?

I think it is pine marten.
Dave
Welcome BTW.

| | | Re: Pine Marten scat? Its very hard to tell pine marten from fox scats, the two are often very similar, as are the diets. John (Woodman) has experience with these I am sure he will be along to give an opinion shortly. |

| | | Re: Pine Marten scat? Looks good for PM to me, Fran. The moss looks like it has urine marks too.
The caveat comes with a fox warning as Dogghound has mentioned. PM scats can be so similar to fox, especially when they've both been eating the same foodstuffs including beetles. However, the mossy log near a stream in Glenelg sounds like the perfect place for a PM to mark its territory!
Scats with a high content of vole remains are usually longer and more twisted than that in your image as Tringa says, seasonal fruit has the same loosening effect on many mammals!
The smell is a good indicator, too. If t'were fox, it would be horrid. |

| | | Re: Pine Marten scat? It smelt okay which is why I thought it may be Pine Marten. I don't get to smell much Fox but I when I do I have always found it quite offensive. My wife thinks I am weird going around smelling scats, but she knits so who is she to question ; 0)

| | | Re: Pine Marten scat? I find desribing smell and taste difficult. Can one buy Parma Violets still?!
That's not a word I would use to describe PM scats, but there again, would be stuck to find the appropriate adjective. Certainly not unpleasant compared to fox which is unpleasant! | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
