I have watched Stoats hunting rabbits many many times. Once they get their sights on a rabbit they are relentless, they keep on pursuing the same rabbit completely ignoring any other rabbit they come across during the chase.
They seem totally oblivious of anything going on around them.
They have fairly poor eyesight and if you stand still they will run right past you. I have had them jump over my feet and run between my legs.
They persist until the rabbit they are chasing either escapes or gives up like this one did.
I have on the odd occassion seen the rabbit turn and butt the stoat so they don't always get their way. |

| | | Re: Stoat attack The rabbit in this scene is not afraid of the stoat. If it was afraid, its' ears would be flat against its neck. This rabbit has sticky-up ears. A curious rabbit has forward-facing ears. This rabbit isn't curious. It is looking like it is "in neutral" even though it seems to be able to see the stoat. Perhaps it was hypnotised??

The attack is great action shot and you do yourself an injustice calling it poor quality. It captures the moment perfectly. Keep 'em coming mate. |

I saw a successful stoat attack on a rabbit (from the stoat's point of view) on Eden last week and couldn't believe that a stoat would be able to take out a full grown rabbit.

| | | Re: Stoat attack What a fantastic photo!!
The only time I've seen a stoat go in for the kill like that there was a brief scrummage in the undergrowth and we thought "One rabbit bites the dust"... then the stoat shot from the grass like a bullet, followed by a very annoyed rabbit which chased it a good 100m across the field. We also had a tail-less stoat around for a while and used to wonder if its tail was a rabbit trophy somewhere.
We have a tougher breed of Super-bun here in Suffolk. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
