| | | Red squirrel with white tail Hubby and I went to Formby yesterday and took some photos of the red squirrels but, we noticed that three of them had white tips to their tails. Does anyone know if this distinguishes them between male and female or is there another reason.
Thanks Barbara |

Formby was alive with Red Squirrels yesterday, we actually went to try to spot the Fox but he never showed, but he sent his three little helpers to meet us |

| | | Re: Red squirrel with white tail Very interesting. See the recent posts about Red Squirrel coat colour in the "Do Grey squirrels have any good points" thread.
I think:
a) the white tail tip is an odd genetic aberration
b) this squirrel has a lot of continental blood in it, the rest of the tail is far too red for the British sub-species. I think also the body fur is too red (for this time of year) to be the British sub-species.
Great picture!

| | | Re: Red squirrel with white tail What a lovely photo. Formby red squirrels are obviously far braver than here on the Isle of Wight. We rarely get that close to them here. I've seen more squished in the road than anywhere else. I was lucky enough to get an occasional visit to my bird table at my old house and I have spotted one briefly in the oak tree at the end of my garden in my new house but they tend to be very shy. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
