Richard - I must admit I was surprised to see you expected an apology in February following comments in this thread.

I did some digging today and cannot find what I thought I remembered seeing somewhere about red bats in an C19th book. Nightshade raises a valid point about vernacular etymology ( a subject you are probably well up in) and this may have some bearing on your quest.

I don't doubt for one moment that the stories exist, as printed in newspapers. But that does not necessarily make them true.
