| | | Deer at Chatsworth House Hello
I will be going to Chatsworth House sometime this week (week beginning 5/9/11) and wondered what the chances of the deer been easy to see will be. Last time I went it was Feb and got some nice views.
If anybody could give me some pointers on the best place in the estate to see/photograph the deer (will be taking a 300mm lens) it would be much appreciated. |

| | | Re: Deer at Chatsworth House Hi - I live near Chatsworth. There seem to be a least two herds of fallows. One is usually on the east side of the river in the part of the park not open to the public but you can get quite good views of them from the river bank. (Park in the CP at Calton Lees). The other herd I usually to the west of the road as you are driving from Calton Lees CP towards Edensor (with the House on the right). Normally when I seen the Reds they have been in area to the east of the river (but north of the house) This part of the park is open to the public. Perhaps easiest to park in public car park in Baslow and it is just a short walk into the Park.
Having said all that, the Country Fair has just been on for fours days so that might have caused them all to move away from their normal area. You might be better to wait until the end of the week as the major clear up is still going on.
Good luck. |

| | | Re: Deer at Chatsworth House I think it is wise to delay your visit till the end of the week - it has been mayhem - hot air balloons, air displays (including red arrows - sadly only 8 of them) guns etc - any wildlife would disappear into the woods for a bit methinks.
Should have said that we have been down to watch the red stag rut - too early for that - but if you walk on the riverside path (north from Mary's Bower) toward Chatsworth Cricket ground and look across the river to the west you may see some reds there. A bit further up the river beyond the Cricket field there is a copse of trees (which you can't access) and there used to be a heronry there - not sure if there still is. Ravens have nested in the Cedars on the west bank and the sandy banks of the river support quite a good sand martin colony - but guess they will have left now.
Lets us know how you get on. |

Good luck. | we were at the Chatsworth fair at the weekend,
and having to pack up after the end of the show on the Friday, we were among some of the last to leave the site,
and on travelling back through the estate through the north car park, towards what i think is called the golden gates entrance ?,
we saw four different herds of deer, of around 20 to 30 animals in each,
this was about 8.30 ish and just turning dusk, there was still a lot of activity around including several hundred overnight campers in the same area,
the deer did not appear unduly bothered by all the activity in the area, and were grazing quite happily, despite the smells of countless barbecues, music ang general noise coming from the camping area,
we watched one of the herds moving slowly towards the caming area, until it got to dark to see them any more,
here is a pic of one of the groups (had to fiddle with the brightness a bit as the shot was taken at dusk and the light was almost gone)
