You do mean "My ENGLISH Bluebell wood" I hope, with not a single Spanish or hybrid for miles around.

| | | Re: Do voles eat bluebells? OK - I have my ENGLISH bluebells now. Next question - the grassy, rather overgrown shady area where I want to plant them probably needs mowing first, but I am worried about this as the pond seems to be full of froglets getting ready to leave home and there are a lot of toads in the garden.
Perhaps I should re-post this under amphibians, but perhaps one of you can tell me whether I should bother to mow it at all, and if so, what would be the best time - when do the amphibians leave the grassy areas, and will this still be in good time for me to plant the bluebell bulbs? |

| | | Re: Do voles eat bluebells? Amphibians will be in the grass until around october when we start to get the first real frosts and night time temperatures decrease. You should either do a thorough hand search prior to mowing or carefully scrape/dig the grass away. I am not sure if you can plant bulbs later on in the year but if you can it would be better. |

| | | Re: Do voles eat bluebells? Could we rewind to the bluebells please and pardon my ignorance but, is there a difference between English, Spanish and/or Scottish bluebells? In their natural incarnation as opposed to their geographical location of course and not counting commercial hybrids.

Yay!!
My other brilliant idea was to plant alliums and wild daffodils near the bluebells, which hopefully will deter the voles and mice.
Whoever it was said that wildlife gardening is easy - clearly never had a wildlife gardent themselves... |
