Shrew/Vole?
Hi

I just got back from a walk with the dog, and as I was on the bridge over the burn, noticed movement in the grass - it looked like a shrew - about 3" long with snout and tail, but it had a black back and white underside.
Most of the shrews I have seen have been brown and wondered what this might be.

Hi - just looked up photo of water shrew, and that's exactly what it is. Gorgeous little thing - very fat and sleek looking - was so busy digging didn't even notice me watching it. Bit concerning the dog might go back to investigate, and it was only when I touched it that it scurried into the undergrowth.
