| | | Stoat chasing a rabbit Now that the last of the grass has been cut for hay it has made it a lot easier to see the local wildlife.
Yesterday afternoon I could hear something squealing in the long grass at the edge of a field, as I watched a rabbit came running out followed closely by a stoat. They ran along the edge of the field with the stoat slowly gaining on the rabbit. after about 50 metres he caught his lunch and dragged it back into the long grass.
He must have had hold of the rabbit when I first heard it squealing, if you look at the photo you can see a wound on the back of the rabbits neck.
I have witnessed stoats hunting many times before but never seen the rabbit get away.

Still find it amazing that a Stoat will take on something as big as a rabbit

| | | Re: Stoat chasing a rabbit Thank you for your replies.
Stoats are great to watch, for their size they are incredibly fierce and a rabbit is easy prey for them.
What surprises me is their ability to carry one off once they have made the kill.
Hobjob,
The lens I take most of my pics with is the Sony 70-400g.
This pic was taken at 400mm. |

| | | Re: Stoat chasing a rabbit I watched a stoat again this morning in the same field, possilbly the same one as yesterday.
He had made a kill and was dragging it back to the long grass.
As I went past I could see him enjoying his breakfast. |

The stoats were the bad guys in Wind in the Willows - but look at the sharp intelligence on that face. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
