A few hours while walking my dogs with my mother I found two young hedgehogs. I have no idea of weight yet but they're small-ish. (Yes, very specific. I know) Since it was mid-afternoon and we're in the middle of greyhound country, we took them home.
They seem to be fine, they're eating and up and about. We believe that their mother must have been killed (especially since I spotted a road-flattened hedgehog while walking the dog).
They've got hedgehog fleas and I'd really like to know what flea powder to use. I know that dog/cat flea spray is poisonous to them, I'd really love a specific brand and, if possible a known supllier. Upon inspection they don't seem to have ticks or flies eggs or anything like that. I didn't seen anymore hedgehogs around, but I'm going to keep an eye out for any.
What age/weight are hedgehogs normally weened? I've asked my dad to bring in some whiskers kitten milk (it's less than 0.2 percent lactose) I'm aware that hedgehogs are allergic to lactose, funnily enough I've got an allergy to milk as well. XD
They're currently being kept in a box with a mesh front (it was a makeshift guineapig cage at one point) and a mesh top that's being held down. It's got newspaper and straw in it. Along with water and what's left of the bits of cooked chicken we gave them. We'll be buying them some catfood, and particular flavours hedgehogs enjoy?
Good grief, I do ramble don't I?
Anyway; in summary;
Two young hedgehogs found.
At least one of them is eating
Both are awake and moving around
Unsure of weight but will be weighed soon
Both have fleas, would like to what's best to treat them with
They'll both be getting names soon, even if for whatever reason they don't last long, naming them won't make me anymore attatched.
... And all this after the day I was just chatting to my friend in Colorado (who's got a pet albino hedgehog) and I was just telling her how much I adored hedgehogs and how much I'd love to have them around again. As we've overwintered hedgehogs before. I remember being about... nine possibly eight when we found a hedgehog and brought it home. It had free reign of our greenhouse and I used to sneak out to see it and put it on my knee, it was so tame. XD; In retrospect that was probably not the best thing for me to do, but nevertheless what's done is done. My dad once found a sacre falcen on the beach... Then there was the guillemots (sp?). Oh, and once he brought a seal home in the back of the car on Christmas eve. It was justified, though, it was on a beach with a bunch of dogs.
