| | | European Squirrels Hi, Does anyone know what species of squirrel would be found in Croatia. Saw one on holiday that from brief sighting looked like a Red apart from the fact it was Black. I think that Greys and Reds have a black form but can't find anything on species distribution. |

| | | Re: European Squirrels Red squirrels are certainly found in Croatia, Dave, so there's a good chance you saw a melanistic one on your travels. To the best of my knowledge, Greys aren't found in that country. WikiPedia has a List of Croatian Mammals and the only sciurid listed is the Red squirrel.
Cheers,

| | | Re: European Squirrels I've never seen (but would love to see) a melanistic Red squirrel, but I've seen a few 'normal' coloured ones. Where abouts are you based? There are quite a few reliable spots to see them in the UK.
Cheers,

| | | Re: European Squirrels Yes, wrong side of the country unfortunately. If you plan a visit south (Hampshire), let me know and I can offer some suggestions of good places to see Reds on the Isle of Wight.
Cheers,
