I was out doing a water vole survey when I found a very clean, old skull among the reeds. I thought, 'I could use that to show people the distinctive teeth', and slipped it in my pocket.

When I got home I was about to bleach the skull when my husband shouted that our 10 year old had blocked the sink with sand. (Don't ask.) So, flustered, I popped the skull in a glass and squirted on some Toilet Duck while I helped unscrew the plug.

It was only when I came to take the skull out of the glass that it dawned on me this was blue Toilet Duck.

Can't sell it as it's against the law to trade w-v parts. I did think of entering it for the Turner Prize, though.

I find it rather bizarre that it even occurred to someone to legislate against the trading of Water-Vole parts !!!

It's because they're so threatened, they enjoy maximum levels of protection.

The pedant in me wants to point out the things you cannot do to and with water voles....

As of the 12th August 2008 Water Voles in Wales have been given full protection under Section 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

It is now an offence to:

·Intentionally kill, injure or take (capture) a water vole;
·Possess or control a live or dead water vole, or any part of a water vole or anything derived from a water vole;
·Intentionally or recklessly damage, destroy or obstruct access to any structure or place which a water vole uses for shelter or protection
·Intentionally or recklessly disturb a water vole while it is occupying a structure or place which it uses for shelter or protection;
·Sell, offer or expose for sale, or have in one’s possession or transport for the purpose of sale, any live or dead water voles, or any part of a water vole or anything derived from a water vole;
·Publish any advertisement, or cause any advertisement to be published, which is likely to be understood as conveying that a person buys or sells, or intends to buy or sell, any of the above things.

Similar restrictions apply to other protected species.
