| | | Re: Hedgehog asleep in feeding box Is the feed tray open or exposed? is the hedgehog limp does it respond to stimuli? any sign of injury? is it wheezing? My first instinct is something is wrong i.e. poisoning, disease, parasite however its hard to tell from just a photo and brief description. Hedgehogs especially males often regularly change nesting site through the summer and will often use a site for a single night which is what it could be doing here. |

| | | Re: Hedgehog asleep in feeding box Thanks for your reply
It is a wooden feeder so he is covered and I expect it is quite dark in there.
I have checked on him a few times since. The first time he had changed position and was still sleeping. Now he is awake and moving through seems a bit sleepy - probably confused by the sunlight |

If asleep during the day and active at night he may have been disturbed and is using this as a temporary home however....
A few little checks you can do if you pop a pair of gloves on and check on...
Are his spines nice and stiff? (should be bristly not floppy)
Does he smell bad? (Sign of infection)
Can he ball fully.. i.e. no legs sticking out? (i.e. no injured limbs)
Can you see a lot of tics on him? (large tic burdens run a hog down)
Is his bum nice and rounded or pinched? (pinched dehydrated)
Can you see small white powdery stuff on him? (fly eggs, mite infestation)
Has he got areas of spine loss or thick ears? (ringworm)
Are there any areas of broken spines? (may indicate animal attack, injury)
Is his breathing wheezy? (can indicate head trauma, pneumonia, lungworm, poisening)
If you have some scales that you don't mind weighing him in (pop something in to cover them and give them a good clean afterwards). Is he a reasonable weight... probably between 800grams to just over a kilo?
Things to look out for when he comes out...
Is he wobbly on his feet?
Does he drag a leg?
Are his eyes nice and bulgy?
Is he eating and drinking?
If in doubt call a local rescuer as they will happily come along and check him out or talk you through some of the above probably. If you find any of the above then do call a rescuer. |

| | | Re: Hedgehog asleep in feeding box Any news on the outcome of the sleeping hog?
Another possibility to add to the great advice given above, is that it could be a nursing mother who popped out for a food top up, and was getting some respite before returning to the natal nest. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
