Woodmice and Maths.

I'm not so sure it would be the same mice coming back. It means that they would have to climb back up the outside of the house and into the upstairs bedroom, every time I drop them out (I've checked for a rope ladder!).

I'll try the suggestion of marking them - say 1 line on the tail with a marker for mouse no.1, 2 lines for mouse no.2 etc..

You underestimate the mice mate. I forgot to say the ones I was catching I was living in a second floor flat at the time so they must have getting in through the wall space and climbing up. We did find 2 small holes behind the washing machine and fridge which we plastered up.
