Preferring to spend my evenings indoors with a good book and a hot drink, we've got one of those battery powered "wildlife cameras" with a built-in motion sensor. When the sensor is triggered it can take one or more photos in quick succession, or record film footage for a set amount of time. Then I can watch our badgers in comfort.
Also good for seeing who is walking through our farmyard, or for that matter raiding the larder between mealtimes. |

| | | Re: My first Badger. I watched one group of badgers for five years, so we got to know each other very well. They are the most wonderful animals. Now I have moved to Scotland I am just starting to watch again. We suddenly found badger setts seemed to be popping up in new places, including one where I walk the dog daily. We have watched this sett six times now. First two nights we saw a single badger. On the second night I was able to get an identifying mark so I could try and work out if there is more than one. However since every watch has been a blank, not helped by the fact it starts to rain with the result we only want to spend a limited amount of time watching. On the plus side I am helping the Scottish Wildlife Trust with watches, this is very rewarding. Last night we had a family watch, one boy was not interested on the way to the sett, but on the way back he was a very excited young man.
I would echo Gavin's advice, try your local badger group, I used to take people out see see my "study" group on a regular basis.
It is worth noting that at this time of year the badgers will be above ground in the daylight, you can expect to see them from 8pm onwards.
Sorry for the long post, but I am very passionate about badgers. |
