Its colouration wasnt anything like our Reds? It was more Brown.

You do get different colour morphs in some areas. All the grey squirrels in Toronto are black.

With those ear tufts yours is definitely a red.

Brown Squirrel??

I think apart from the ground squirrels thet only other one out there is Red.

Down here all Red Squirrels are black

Red Squirrels also tend to show darker pelage in winter where they often go more brown in colour with some grey in the coat. Tufts are also more prevalent in winter.

Regarding colour there are possibly 40 sub-species and they can be very variable as a specie from bright red and black through to buff browns. Some races are dimorphic and trimorphic showing two tones. Additionally (not in your photo) you often get melanistic individuals in mainland Europe, in Britain this is less common.
