| | | Formby Red Squirrels After hearing so many conflicting stories about whether there were any Red Squirrels left at Formby, I decided to see for myself!
To my delight I spotted 4, one of which spent some time foraging on the woodland floor. He was too far away for a photo ....and the others were just too fast!
The main thing is that I saw them!

| | | Re: Formby Red Squirrels Yes thats good Tracey, but there used to be absolutely loads.
Inland is Mere sands wood, which is a good pocket to see them in too, one of my favourite places to explore for birding and flowers too - I remember being there once when it was dry and very windy - got covered in sand blown in from the bay, must be a good few miles away - it was a red-out, most amazing.
Did you bomb up to Ainsdale or Martin Mere or Marshside on your trip out?
Cheers
Ken

Yes, I walked along the beach afterwards. Really enjoyed it too!
Ken, I didn't get chance to go anywhere else, although I did see a sign for Martin Mere! I never knew where it was until yesterday!

| | | Re: Formby Red Squirrels I first went to formby about 15 years ago. It was Red Squirrel City! We bought some food and took photos of the many many squirrels there. We have been several times since then. Last time however (2 years ago) We stayed for 2 hours and didnt see one squirrel. It was so depressing.
I hope they are making a comeback.

| | | Re: Formby Red Squirrels I'm planning to go to Formby this Sunday as it's forecast a nice sunny day(but there's time yet!)
I've never been before and given that the dreaded squirrel pox seems to be an ever present danger what is the likelyhood of spotting a few Reds at this time?
I'd like to take a few photos too.. any tips?
Many thanks.

| | Re: Formby Red Squirrels Ive worked in lots of properties around that area and they frequent the local gardens. over the years numbers do seem to have dropped.
one other point - i've seen all colours from pale ginger to dark chestnut. one was even matt black, it looked like it had beeen up a chimney.

| | | Re: Formby Red Squirrels I visited Formby this morning, just for half an hour, and spotted one squirrel by the top of the boardwalk.
There was a bar chart by the entrance showing that numbers are on the increase again. |
