| | | Re: Rabbit burrows.... They will probably escape and if they have not been spayed the chances of them breeding with a wild male is high......
The other thing to bear in mind is that female rabbits have a big chance (some say 80% chance) of developing cancer before the age of 5yrs unless they are spayed.

| | | Re: Rabbit burrows.... They most certainly can breed with their wild cousins AND they’re a nightmare to recapture!
Last month my friend and I finally managed to capture a domesticated rabbit which had been living wild in a wood adjacent to our local nature reserve and had evaded our capture attempts since November last year (when my friend first spotted her). RSPCA also tried to catch her without success and said she had undoubtedly been dumped there in the middle of nowhere (farmland surrounding immediate area).
Between us we took it in turns to do a daily food drop and we noticed somebody else had also been leaving food for her – whatever time of day we visited, she was sat out in the open waiting for her meals on wheels! Thankfully she managed to survive the harsh December weather.
When we did eventually manage to capture her (I rigged up a simple trap box with opening flap on string, lol!), she was taken to a Rabbit Rescue who then took her to their rabbit specialist vet to be spayed and vaccinated before rehoming her. The rabbit was a Mini Rex pedigree breed and during the spaying the vet discovered she was pregnant with 7 babies. She also had heavy flea infestation. But, said bunny had a very happy outcome, the vet asked to keep her! She’s now living a semi-wild life in the vet’s garden .
So, the (rather long-winded!) moral of this story Wizzo, is to urge your sister to get them spayed pronto! |

| | | Re: Rabbit burrows.... To be a really GOOD rabbit keeper, they will ideally need vaccinations for Myxomatosis and VHD (both killer diseases) in addition to their spaying...... Cost per rabbit to get them spayed and fully vaccinated, varies from vet to vet, but should be between £65 and £120 per rabbit. Perhaps get them spayed first..... and then save up!!
Vaccines are at least annual.
