| | | Bat flew in last night Can anyone help me with a possible identification of a bat, which looked quite a bit bigger than a Pipistrelle, which flew into the kitchen last night.
My companion thought it had large ears but wasn't absolutely certain. Are there many bats about this early in the year (March 6th) on the Isle of Islay ?
Last year, about the same time of year or maybe a little later, we watched a bat flying at roof of car height or lower, up and down the back drive which has big sycamores on one side and smaller ones and fuschias on the left side. It appeared to have white undersides and was gliding from time to time.
Was that a different species or the same ? Any help much appreciated. |

| | | Re: Bat flew in last night ts hard to ID bats without a detector when your near one. Without a more detailed description its very hard. I dont know what species you get on Islay but you get the following that far north.
Daubenton's
Natterers
Common Pipistrelle
Soprano Pipistrelle
Brown Long eared
Possibly Brandts and Whiskered
The first sounds like a brown long eared, the second could be several species. |

| | | Re: Bat flew in last night We took the bat detector out last night, to the driveway where we saw the bat last year. From the same big old sycamore where we heard some strange noises last year, we immediately picked up some sounds at 47.2 kHz.
Immediately thought it was Natterer's, but then thought it was a bit slower.
Only new at this so shall have to learn a lot more about the possible species. We do have Natterer's, Daubenton's Brown Long eared and Pipistrelle sp. recorded on the island.
Thanks. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
