Last week I was driving on the B966 between Edzell and the A90, between Edzell and Inchbare when an animal, larger than a red squirrel bounded across the road. it was dull and drizzling and so I could not identify any colour pattern. The outstanding feature was the bushy tail and bounding movement.
The B966 is flanked by coniferous plantation and in parts is quite close to the North Esk river.
I have reported the possible sighting to SNH but was wondering if any members here know of previous sightings in this area. |

Have a look on the NBN gateway for other sightings, you can either search by species or 10km square. National Biodiversity Network Gateway

Edzell Wood looks a likely place for Martens. I don't have any record knowledge for the particular area but know they are further south. Your description of the locomotion is spot on and with the tail is a clincher.
I'm up near Oban next week assisting with PM surveying, if Edzel wasn't so far I'd pop over and have look round! |

A recall my mother telling me years ago that my grandfather was a regular traveller from Dundee to Brechin and saw a pine marten on more than one occasion. |

Audrey - Thanks for the link, I checked it out. There have been sightings fairly close by but not in the particular woods near Edzell.
Woodman - If you are ever in the area I would be more than pleased to show you the location of my sighting.

Maybe goes to show that the habitat hereabouts can maintain Pine Marten populations.
From the NBN Gateway map there has been a sighting in Montreathmont Forest, close to Brechin. |

Thats really interesting DM, we need to encourage The Woodman to head east and have a scout around in the area, it certainly sounds if there could be a very long standing population on PM's in that location ! | | |
