I think by far the majority of racing shoes are aluminium for lightness.

Nor me, but when there's a ton of flesh standing on it in proximity to a live conductor then I'm sure there won't be much in it!

As well as steel shoes, don't forget that most would have a metal bit in their mouths, even a mild rubber snaffle will have metal cheekpieces.
