There are a number of postings on this forum about dead badgers on roads and speculation about dumping by baiters, farmers etc. Records of this are extremely rare but as we are now approaching the first of the two annual spikes when the number of badger RTA casualties peaks here are two simple rules for anyone seeing a dead badger on the road:
1) Note the road number and location if you can do so safely. (For those with satnav it may be easy to get a grid reference but for those without, the distance on your mileometer to the next junction, farm etc would be fine).
2) Report the casualty and its location to your local badger group as soon as you can. (Details from The Badger Trust: Affiliated Groups if you are in England or Wales or email
ian@scottishbadgers.org.uk if you are in Scotland).
People following these two simple rules will ensure that many more road casualties than at present are reported and if there is something suspicious then an investigation can take place.
There is currently a targeted badger crime initiative, Operation Meles underway throughout the UK. You can help both with this and with badger sett monitoring by local badger groups if you follow the two simple rules above.
We can reduce both badger crime and RTAs but only with your help.
Thank you.
