| | | Re: Possible Otter Signs Went back today. Found another smaller but very similar scat on the same tree. Also among some roots a burrow on the other side of the bank to the previous hole. Was about 15cm diameter. That seems quite small to me. Could this point to Mink? However, the scat had no smell even when broken up. As to the other 'holt', the burn was very high today and it is surrounded by water. I think if it ever was a holt it isn't in use. |

I think it very unlikely that either of your scats or the hole are otter related but you really do need to be careful. If this was an otter holt then your returning to it unless you have a licence could constitute disturbance and be a major problem for both you and the N.T.S.
As I mentioned before the wildlife laws in Scotland are very different and much stricter than those in England and Wales. |

| | | Re: Possible Otter Signs Hi yes i do remember what you said but as i'm getting no closer to them than someone walking to the bird hide would, there should be no issue, right? |

| | | Re: Possible Otter Signs No James not right I am afraid. It is a question of intent. Once you go to what you know or belive to be a holt you would be recklessly disturbing any otter occupying it. The law in relation to wildlife is a minefield and it would be a HUGE pity to fall foul of it. I suspect that in this case otters are not immediately present at the site but if they are then you need to be licensed to be making repeated visits. |

| | | Re: Possible Otter Signs I was down there today doing a squirrel survey and took a visit to the hide. Came across some very small tracks, and I think this is looking Mink. Gonna go down and get a better picture after lunch.
Mink trapping is happening on the Dee and very close to here so I think if it is Mink it would be trapped.
