Deer deaths

Did anyone else see this: Death at the deer park (From The Northern Echo)
The report puts it down to inevitable winter deaths but I'm rather surprised that the deer died en masse in this way and also that nothing could be done to alleviate the problem.

Perhaps they died en masse like this because they were altogether at the same spot when the ice broke through. Very sad indeed, but it looks like they tried to feed them away from the lake to discourage them and I should think, even if they had fenced it, they were likely to jump over.
Very distressing all round really.

I wonder if they were actually thirsty, and were trying to get to the water to drink. The article mentioned they were being fed away from the lake, but didn't mention water at all, although that may just have been an oversight by the journalist.
