THe government has issued a consultation asking the public if shooting of badgers, either cage trapped or free running should be allowed.
Please act now and visit badgerprotectionleague.com to see how you can help stop this senseless slaughter

"Whilst we have sympathy for farmers whose cattle are found to have bovine tb and the restrictions and loss of income that this brings - we cannot condone the killing of any species in order to protect another. Anyone with any sense can see that culling is not a decent proper modern way to deal with this problem: even IF it were possible to eliminate all badgers (as opposed to culling) there would still be creatures that would act as vectors for the disease - it doesn't matter whether you kill ALL or just SOME badgers it will not address b-tb in cattle. The ONLY route is vaccination. It is no longer ethical to kill - and in fact it never was ......... " |

| | | Re: Stop the slaughter of badgers - PLEASE VIEW Hi,
I've done some research and written out answers to the questions listed in the consultation document. I was going to email my reply to defra but was wondering whether there was any special way of writing it up or if I need to state anything for them?
They've made it terribly hard for people tot share their views, in my opinion. |

I just made sure it was that I clear that I was replying to the consultation included the title and reference of it.
Really hope they don't allow of the preffered option to go ahead, there seems to be very little benefits to a cull. |

| | | Re: Stop the slaughter of badgers - PLEASE VIEW There are no benefits to a cull whatsoever except to keep the current government in the good books of the farmers. Culling will not reduce BTb it is most likely to spread it due to the results of the perturbation effect. What spreads BTb is the movement around the country of untested cattle. The spread to the north of England post foot and mouth was due to this.
Scotland is entirely BTb free and Scottish farmers derive huge business benefits from that. This status was achieved without a cull and was as a direct result of the Scottish Government's strict testing policy. Cattle brought into Scotland from England, Ireland etc are subject to rigourous testing regime before they are allowed into general circulation.
In the last year for which statistics are avaiable 16,192 cattle were culled in England & Wales due to positive BTb tests, 101,000 were culled due to mastitis etc. Bear in mind that milk cows ideally produce one calf a year and that half those calves will be male and therefore culled immediately if they cannot be exported for veal production. Farmers routinely cull thousands of non beef cattle each year for reasons completely unconnected with Bovine Tb.
