Hello, my first post on the forums, and it's about skulls! (That's a polecat skull in my icon by the way).
The quick and simple way to tell dog and fox skulls apart is to look at and feel the brow ridges (or supra orbital process, for the technically inclined). The fox skull has a small concavity on the brow ridge, but the dog skull has a very much heavier ridge, with a convex surface.
Cheers!
