| | | Re: Britain's biggest wild animal shot dead. I was in a local antique shop recently which had a number of horns, antlers and so on for sale, they look very forlorn. I am surprised that there is still any taste for this kind of relic, it must be applicable to the " stands proudly alongside head of dog caught in the open when driving my car" person, I imagine.
Does anyone remember the Tom Lehrer song with the spoken bit that goes
"Rover was killed by a Pontiac, and the onlookers said it was done with such skill and artistry, they awarded the driver both ears and the tail".
Nowt so queer as folks.

Remember, antlers are shed so unless they are still attached to the skull they may have been picked up from the ground anyway. (But probably not. )
This all seems rather a "non-story" in that IF this particular deer was killed as part of a legitimate cull then so what? If it was shot illegally by poachers in a similar way to which certain immigrants seem to disregard this country's laws when helping themselves to swans/ducks/deer from the local park then they should be hunted down and dealt with harshly. This stag, however magnificent he may/may not have been was in no way a pet and therefore giving him a name is wrong anyway, but of course endears him to Mr & Mrs Gullible-newswatcher in a way no anonymous animal would, hence much of the kerfuffle.
Deb's post just about says it all and Chris Packham's statement on the subject on "Autumnwatch" was sensible and unemotive. (I think it was towards the end of the "Unsprung" section.)

Fair enough if it's not to your taste or unfashionable. There's a difference in using antlers and displaying them to make a statement to others that you took the animal's life.

| | | Re: Britain's biggest wild animal shot dead. The Times today are stating that Johnny Kingdom is at the root of all this. He is, apparently, the sole "witness" who heard shots, or saw a body lying in the grass, or saw it being loaded into a low-loader, or saw it loaded into a van (apparently his story is a somewhat variable depending on which day you catch him). He tipped off the Western Morning Press first, who happened to be syndicating a photo of the rutting stag in the nationals about a week earlier (as last year). Kingdom has since been touting quotes, footage and photos (of what not always appears to be the same animal) to the media for hundreds of pounds a time, and is flogging singed photos of "the Emperor" from a market stall this weekend. The Times wonders if his leaking of this shooting 'story' last week (several weeks after the event) has anything to do with the start of his new telly series this week.
I think I know all I need to know about this charade now! |
